Designing your own hoodie is easier than you think. All you need is a bit of inspiration and the right tools.
How I designed my own hoodie
I start with a design
So, in this Blog right here I'm going to show you exactly how i made my hoodies. We also are making the t-shirt version so that's it for now! Let me walk through the design process and demonstrate on what we need when doing these types of projects together--Let’s get straight into it...
The process of designing a hoodie starts with the graphic. For this specific design I wanted to go with a typography design. Typography, in its most basic form, is the visual arrangement of words (not to be confused with the font, which is the style of the text). Anytime text gets printed or displayed, good or bad, there is typography involved.
In graphic design, typography is the art of typesetting: arranging type in a way that makes sense, along with choosing appropriate typefaces (fonts), making sure the letter spacing and line spacing is correct, and designing the way the words interact with the graphic elements to be aesthetically pleasing.
In this case, we'll use an existing font that's been downloaded from Dafont which offers thousands upon thousand free fonts for designers just like us!
Now all you have do it find your perfect match and voila--instant design gratification guaranteed at home base camp (or office).
Ensure image quality
Once the graphic is complete, we need to vectorize it. This ensures that the image will stay sharp and clean when it's printed on a hoodie. We use Adobe Illustrator for this step.
All right, the next thing I did was go the the printable areas page and save the hoodie template to my desktop. I'm going to use this to get a preview of my print but also I want to give the printers a rough idea on the position and size I would like my design to go.
I then open up illustrator and click on the letter "t," to start typing in my word "machine" once I'm happy with the spacing, I right click on my mouse and hit the "create outlines" tab which results in turning my font into a solid shape. Since the font is only on my computer I have to either create the words into an outline or provide the printer with the actual font file. I save and export this file as a PDF and naming the file with the title "Machine - Front Centre Print.pdf" Call me OCD all you want, I just like my design files organised in a easily to find manner 🙂
If you don't have access to illustrator, you can always just email us your design file. Stage 2, pick a hoodie!
Alright! now that I've finished with my design I can now jump onto choosing my hoodie. There's a few questions and things I want to consider. Here's a run down below on my thought process!
- I want a hoodie made from a thicker, more durable fabric because I live in Melbourne and it gets pretty cold here during the winter.
- I want a hoodie that's a popular choice for all types of body shapes and sizes because I have a wide demographic and audience from all ages.
-The colour of the hoodie. For this round I want a dark coloured hoodie, having my own clothing brand as well as being a retail buyer I know that a black is one of the most popular colours and I personally think it goes well with everything I have in my wardrobe.
-I want a hoodie with an affordable price point that is high in quality. It's important to me that my customers expect quality so I can't skip this step in the pursuit of buying a cheaper material or hoodie.
-I want a hoodie that will print well with my design so fabric choice and type of blend is super important if I want an awesome high quality result!
Conclusion?! after browsing through the range of styles fits and prices, I ended up choosing the Mens Stencil Hoodie by AS Colour. It ticks all my boxes and gives me that peace of mind moving forward, happy days!
Choosing my printing method
I chose screen printing as my method of choice for my custom hoodies because I think it offers the best quality of print for my designs. If I was ordering only a small handful maybe I would've chosen a DTG or Digital Transfer Print method. I also think screen printing provides a more vibrant and long-lasting print.
When creating custom hoodies, one of the most important things to consider is the design. The design is what will make or break your hoodie, so it's important to put some thought into it. If you're not sure where to start, there are plenty of resources online that can help you get started. Once you have your design, the next step is to choose the right printing method.
Screen printing is my top choice for custom hoodies because I think it offers the best quality of print. Screen printing involves using a stencil to apply ink to the fabric, which is then passed through a screen so that the ink can be transferred onto the hoodie. This method results in a more vibrant and long-lasting print than other methods, such as digital printing or embroidery.
If you're looking for custom hoodies that are both stylish and comfortable, then you can't go wrong with screen printing. With this method, you can be sure that your hoodie will turn out looking great and that it will last for a long time.
